    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Essen rabies vaccination schedule?

Five intramuscular doses of the rabies vaccine on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28 from the day of exposure. It's the standard WHO-approved regimen worldwide.

What is the Zagreb 2-1-1 schedule?

Two IM doses on day 0 (one in each deltoid) followed by single IM doses on days 7 and 21 — only 3 visits total instead of 5.

When is rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) required?

For WHO Category III exposures (bites through the skin, mucosal contact, or bat exposure) in patients who have never been previously vaccinated. Dose is 20 IU/kg (HRIG) or 40 IU/kg (ERIG).

    Can PEP be started late?

Yes — PEP is effective as long as symptoms haven't started. Even after weeks, start vaccination immediately.

    Is the calculator free?

    Yes, no signup, no limits.

Which schedule should I choose for a new patient?

Essen for reliable OPD follow-up; Zagreb (2-1-1) when the patient is likely to skip visits. Both are equally efficacious per WHO.
