Body Mass Index is one of the first numbers every OPD doctor checks — yet most clinics still calculate it on paper or a phone calculator. Our Free BMI Calculator gives you an instant, professional BMI reading with proper WHO and Asian-Indian classification, right inside your browser.
What is the Free BMI Calculator?
It's a browser-based tool from SmartClinic India that computes Body Mass Index from height and weight in either metric (kg, cm) or imperial (lb, ft/in) units, and instantly categorises the patient as underweight, normal, overweight, or obese — using both WHO and Asian-Indian cut-offs relevant for Indian patients.

The BMI formula & WHO vs Asian-Indian cut-offs
BMI is calculated as weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². What differs between guidelines is where the bands sit:
| Category | WHO (global) | Asian-Indian |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | < 18.5 | < 18.5 |
| Normal | 18.5 – 24.9 | 18.5 – 22.9 |
| Overweight | 25 – 29.9 | 23 – 24.9 |
| Obese | ≥ 30 | ≥ 25 |
The tool shows both — so you can flag high-risk Asian-Indian patients earlier without doing mental math.
How to calculate BMI in 3 simple steps
- Open the tool — Visit smartclinicindia.com/tools/bmi-calculator.
- Choose your units — Metric (kg + cm) or imperial (lb + ft/in). One-tap toggle.
- Enter height and weight — BMI value, category (both scales) and ideal-weight range appear instantly.
Who is this tool for?
- General physicians & family doctors — obesity, hypertension, diabetes risk screening.
- Dietitians & nutritionists — baseline for diet plans.
- Paediatricians — use alongside BMI-for-age growth charts.
- Gynaecologists & obstetricians — pre-pregnancy BMI assessment.
- Cardiologists, endocrinologists, bariatric specialists — quick reproducible number at every visit.
Why BMI still matters in Indian OPDs
BMI isn't perfect, but it's the fastest, most reproducible screening number for a busy OPD. In India the WHO cut-offs under-diagnose obesity — abdominal fat starts causing metabolic problems at BMI values that WHO still labels "normal". Using Asian-Indian cut-offs picks up type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk earlier, which is why the tool shows both.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the BMI Calculator really free?
Yes. No signup, no trial limit, no hidden charges. Open the page and use it — that's it.
Does it support Indian BMI cut-offs?
Yes. We show both WHO and Asian-Indian classifications so obesity is flagged earlier in Indian patients (≥ 25 vs ≥ 30).
What is the BMI formula the tool uses?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared: BMI = kg / m². For imperial inputs we convert to SI internally so the result is identical.
Is my patient data stored anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded, logged or shared with third parties.
Can I use it on mobile?
Yes, the tool is fully responsive and works on any smartphone or tablet in the OPD.
Is BMI accurate for athletes or elderly patients?
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. In muscular athletes it can overestimate obesity; in the elderly with sarcopenia it can underestimate risk. Always interpret it with waist circumference and clinical context.
Can BMI be used for children?
For paediatric patients use BMI-for-age percentiles from a growth chart. The calculated BMI value is still correct, but the cut-offs are age- and sex-specific.
